Research February Newsletter
Colleagues,
February marks the beginning of Year 4 of our five-year iTHRIV (CTSA) award in collaboration with Virginia Tech, University of Virginia, and Inova Health Systems. During the past 3 years, I hope that you have been able to explore the resources and funding opportunities. Carilion Clinic has been fortunate to have researchers funded in both the Pilot Translational and Clinical Studies and the Community Seed Grant Programs. Moreover, in this current funding cycle, Drs. Anita Kablinger and Lee Cooper, Carilion Clinic and Virginia Tech respectively, and colleagues were awarded funding for the research study entitled: A Comparison of the Effectiveness of Telepsychiatry with a Randomized Waitlist Control Utilizing Patient Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs). Drs. Marrieth Rubio (Carilion Clinic) and Cynthia Morrow (Virginia Department of Health) and colleagues were awarded funding for the community project: Implementation of low-cost solutions to help facilitate linkage to care for persons with Hepatitis C Virus infection.
In addition to funding research endeavors, several of the informatics tools including REDCap, TriNetX, and the National COVID Cohort Collaborative (N3C) are due in part to our CTSA association. As we embark on the final two years of the grant, a focus on community involvement in research will be a central theme.
In closing, I would like to thank our Marketing and Communications team for their advocacy of research at Carilion Clinic. You may have seen our Rewards of Research Series or our new Twitter account: @CarilionRandD. Please follow us.

National Scientific Presentation
Title: Obese, rural endometrial cancer survivors’ health behaviors and lifestyle intervention preferences: What’s COVID got to do with it?
Dr. Armbruster will be presenting at the annual Society of Gynecologic Oncology Annual meeting in March 2022. Early stage endometrial cancer survivors treated at Carilion Clinic since 2010 were surveyed. Only 33% of survivors were meeting national physical activity recommendations before COVID-19 and this number decreased during the pandemic to 17% of survivors. Additionally, compared to pre-COVID-19, post- COVID-19, one-third of survivors made poorer nutritional choices and nearly 1/2 reported worsening mental health. This survey highlights the growing needs of our survivors and supports the development of lifestyle interventions for this population.
