Carilion Children’s Teddy Bear Clinic Brings Hands-On Learning to Lexington

Carilion Children’s certified child life specialists help children become comfortable and confident with the medical environment through play.

Children and their favorite stuffed animals recently received a hands-on introduction to health care during a Carilion Children’s Teddy Bear Clinic in Lexington.

Held Sept. 26 at Carilion Children’s Pediatric Medicine – Lexington, the event invited children ages 3 to 10 to bring a favorite stuffed animal for a check-up while learning what to expect during their own visits to the doctor.

Carilion Children’s certified child life specialists guided children through interactive activities designed to teach them about the human body, medical equipment and the health care environment in an engaging, age-appropriate way. Children had the opportunity to become familiar with some of the tools and experiences they may encounter during a medical visit — with their stuffed animals serving as the patients.

Thomas Donohue, MD, with Carilion Children’s Pediatric Medicine – Lexington, joined the event and brought his own teddy bear to participate alongside the children.

The Teddy Bear Clinic offered families a fun, approachable way to learn about health care while helping children build familiarity and confidence around medical experiences. The event also gave families an opportunity to connect with members of their local Carilion Children’s care team.

Carilion Children’s Pediatric Medicine – Lexington is accepting new patients. Parents and caregivers can call 540-462-6270.
