In-Person Primary Care
Best for: non-urgent concerns, care for chronic conditions and well visits
These are prescheduled, face-to-face visits during regular business hours with your established Carilion Clinic Family Medicine or Carilion Children’s physician.
If you don't have a primary care physician, you can use the search function at the top of this page or call 1-800-422-8482.
In Roanoke, new patients can call Community Care at 540-512-5200 for same-day or next-day appointments. Community Care is a good option for follow-up care after leaving the hospital; they can provide care and get you set up for ongoing primary care.
Virtual Primary Care
Best for: non-urgent health concerns
Current patients can schedule a video visit with a virtualist—an experienced primary care clinician who shares updates with your regular Carilion clinician. Ask your care team to set it up! Learn more
In-Person Urgent Care
Best for: acute but non-emergency symptoms and conditions, such as:
- COVID-19 and flu
- Vomiting and diarrhea
- Sprains and strains
- Minor burns or rashes
These are face-to-face visits with VelocityCare clinicians for patients age 2 and up. Walk-ins are welcome at Carilion’s VelocityCare urgent care locations, which are open daily until 8 p.m.
To shorten your wait, use MyChart to pre-register and “Save a Spot.”
Scheduled Virtual Urgent Care
Best for: non-emergency symptoms and conditions, such as:
- COVID-19 and flu
- Headaches
- Sinus congestion
- Sore throat
- Urinary tract infections
MyChart users can call to schedule an urgent care video visit with a VelocityCare provider. To schedule, call 540-769-0985.
Emergency Care
Best for: emergency symptoms and conditions, such as:
- Difficulty breathing
- Head trauma
- Heart attack or stroke symptoms
- Poisoning
- Vomiting/coughing up blood
Call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room for medical emergencies. Carilion's Emergency Departments and our Level 1 and Level 2 Trauma Centers provide 24/7 care for patients of all ages.
Mental Health Care
Call 988 for suicidal thoughts or other urgent mental health needs.

Parking Assistance and Valet
Parking assistance is available at inpatient and outpatient facilities throughout Carilion's Roanoke Campus.
Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital and Carilion Children's Hospital
Weekdays 6 a.m.- 6 p.m.
Weekends 8 a.m. - 4 p.m.
Attendants at the hospital's main entrance help with parking and safely escort patients and guests from their vehicles. They can provide wheelchairs and directions to your destination as needed. If you leave after hours, you may pick up your keys from the security officer at the lobby information desks.

Roanoke Campus Services
Carilion Clinic's Roanoke campus spans several miles, and many patients have appointments at multiple locations. Whether you are in the hospital or getting lab work done after a checkup at Riverside, take advantage of parking assistance and our campus shuttle to travel car- and hassle-free.
Carilion Clinic also sponsors the Star Line, a free trolley that runs from downtown Roanoke to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital, with 15 convenient stops in between. The Star Line operates weekdays from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Campus Shuttle
Guest Services provides a shuttle service that transports patients, visitors and employees throughout Roanoke’s Carilion campus. Visit our interactive shuttle tracker for a detailed map.

Labs and Imaging
Before You Arrive
If you are getting routine bloodwork, your physician may not give you special instructions.
For many blood tests and Diagnostic Imaging, however, you may have to fast or drink a special solution beforehand. Be sure to follow those instructions before your appointment.

What To Expect
Lab Services
Drawing blood is a simple procedure that may be done in your physician's office or in a separate lab. You usually do not require an appointment to visit a Carilion Clinic lab.
Wear a loose-fitting top that provides access to your forearm. When you check in at the registration desk, they will direct you to the lab waiting area. Once you are called back, the procedure should only take a few minutes.
Imaging Services
Our accredited imaging locations provide access to today’s most advanced radiologic diagnostic technology and studies. Imaging is used to:
- Monitor your health, such as with a mammogram or a bone density scan
- Understand the extent of an illness or injury; this includes X-ray, ultrasound, nuclear medicine, PET, MRI and CT scans
- Deliver interventional procedures as a treatment option
Please leave jewelry and other valuables at home and arrive 15 minutes before your appointment. Some exam rooms are kept cool, so dress in layers or bring a jacket.
When you check in at the registration desk, they will direct you to your destination. How long the testing takes and what is involved can vary considerably. Reach out to your care team with questions.

Volunteer Services
Volunteer Opportunities
From serving snacks in waiting rooms to delivering flowers and cards to patient rooms, Carilion volunteers make a difference in the lives of others. Carilion volunteers are warm, caring people with a heart for serving others.
Volunteers provide service to patients, guests and staff in 38 different assignment areas and generally work between three and five hours, one day a week. Collectively, volunteers donate thousands of service hours each year with an annual value of $500,000 to the organization. Volunteers will tell you they get their reward in the smiles they receive from people whose lives they have touched.

Volunteers will have the privilege to assist in some of our annual fundraisers to provide for our Hotel Assistance Program, which serves patient families that need overnight accommodations. Fundraisers that benefit this program include:

Youth Volunteer Program
Teens must be 14 to 17 years old to participate in the eight-week summer program, which runs from mid-June to mid-August. Youth as well as a parent must commit in writing to attend at least six weeks. The application deadline for each summer is Feb. 1.
