In 2020, John Epling, M.D., M.S.Ed and Michelle Rockwell, Ph.D., R.D., were awarded a Tier II RAP grant for their two-part study titled Targeting Health Service Overuse in Primary Care: A Preliminary Study. Briefly, this study looked at effective interventions to address low-value care (LVC) services – those that confer minimal or no benefit or may cause net harm –in the clinical setting. The study aimed to obtain focused data related to LVC within Carilion Clinic Primary Care. 

Results from their study were presented by Dr. Rockwell in an oral presentation titled Does De-Implementation of Low Value Care Impact the Patient-Clinician Relationship? A Mixed Methods Study at the November 2021 North American Primary Care Research Group (NAPCRG) meeting. We are pleased to announce that it was selected as a Pearl, which are the top research studies presented at the annual meeting. “The Pearls are chosen each year by the Community Clinician Advisory Group (CCAG) as the top research studies having the greatest impact on clinical practice as presented at the NAPCRG Annual Conference. Members of the CCAG present the Pearls at local, regional, and national venues.” Please join us in congratulating Drs. Rockwell and Epling for their award.
