Colleagues,
As the academic semester comes to a close, I would like to sincerely thank all of the students, residents and fellows for their research endeavors while associated with Carilion Clinic. Your contributions have made our organization better by investigating new and improved treatments for our patients. Many of your contributions were highlighted in our recently completed Research Day. I would like to give a special thank you to our Pharmacy Department for their numerous projects to improve the quality of our organization. In total, 29 individuals presented their finding via an oral presentation. Numerous others presented their results in our virtual poster session. As we wish everyone best of luck in their next chapter, we look forward to working with the new students, residents and fellows that will arrive over the next few months.
As you have seen or read, Southwest Virginia is a thriving destination for research. Virginiabio https://www.vabio.org/ is holding their annual meeting, THRIVE2022: Building the Bioscience Ecosystem to Shape the Future in Roanoke Virginia on May 28, 2022 at the Hotel Roanoke. The keynote address will be given by Nancy Agee and Michael Friedlander, two individuals that have been strong advocates for the success of this region. Another significant event is the 3rd International Precision Neuroscience Conference held May 25-26 in Roanoke: https://precisionneuroscience.org/#schedule. The meeting will convene an international group of researchers discussing topics ranging from Mental Health, Neurodevelopment, Brain Cancer, Neurodegeneration, and Injury.

Darren Hackley, MA - Clinical Research coordinator I – Orthopaedics
Darren Hackley was recently hired as a clinical research coordinator in support of the Orthopaedics Department. Darren went to Liberty University where he was a double major in Biomedical Sciences and Psychology. He then continued at Liberty University earning a Masters of Molecular Medicine. Darren has experience as a clinical scribe and has been a clinical research assistant in the Orthopaedics department for the past year.
Lauren Lipphard, BS - Clinical Research Associate - Psychiatry
Lauren Lipphard is a graduate of Radford University Carilion with a Bachelor's in Biomedical Sciences, and is currently pursuing her Master's in Clinical Research Administration. She is joining our research team as a Clinical Research Associate to support Psychiatry Research with Dr. Anita Kablinger. Her previous experience as an Intern for Carilion Clinic Research and Development has provided her with a unique perspective of clinical trials and will aid in her new role within our Department. Please join us in welcoming Lauren to our team.
Jenny Ricks, MA - Clinical Research Coordinator II – Research & Development
Jenny Ricks is a new Research and Development clinical research coordinator who will primarily support sponsored clinical trials in the surgery department. Jenny completed her bachelor’s degree in nutrition at the University of Southern Mississippi and her master’s degree in Health Studies at the Southeastern Louisiana University. Prior to joining our team, Jenny worked as a research specialist at the Pennington Biomedical Research Center.
Susan A. Tolliver BS, MBA - Basic Science Laboratory Manager
Susan Tolliver recently joined the Department of Research and Development as the Basic Science Laboratory Manager. Susan is a graduate of Longwood College and has an MBA from Virginia Tech. She brings a wealth of clinical experience as a former Medical Technologist and Clinical Laboratory Scientist. In addition, she held the position of Manager of Multidiscipline Laboratories at the Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine. More recently, she has been Academic Laboratory Manager for Jefferson College of Health Sciences and later Radford University Carilion. In that role she was both a manger and instructor responsible for academic and research support, outreach, instruction, supervision, purchasing and general laboratory management. In her new role, Susan will expand our efforts in Translational Research including the development of a central biorepository. Susan is located in the the Community Hospital building (CRCH) on the 4th floor. Addiction Research Community of Roanoke Valley
As an aspect of Carilion Clinic’s mission to serve our community, a multidisciplinary Task Force has been formed to address substance use disorders (SUD) in our region through education and treatment strategies. To this end, a monthly forum to discuss research endeavors occurs on the first Wednesday of each month at 12:00 noon. Previous topics have included the Emergency Department Bridge Program coordinated by our Emergency and Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine departments. The next speaker is Dr. Anne Ickes, Emergency Department Resident, 3rd year. Her topic is GOT IT AUDIT-C: Increase screening for alcohol misuse and implement a protocol for those who screen positive for risky drinking in our emergency department.
