Colleagues,
March holds a special place in the calendar due to the anticipation of warm weather with the arrival of Spring, the “madness” of college basketball, the midpoint of the academic semester, Match Day and lastly the preparation of abstracts and posters for Research Day. Due to the uncertainty of COVID-19, the decision was made to continue Research Day as 100 % virtual this year. We are in hopes that eventually we will be able to go back to a room full of participants and crowded poster sessions. Although we have been engulfed in a pandemic for over two years, our employees and students were still able to pursue research endeavors in addition to their clinical responsibilities. This effort should be applauded! On that note, I hope you have been able to view our Rewards of Research series. If you have, you will have seen the many collaborative projects occurring with Virginia Tech, Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine, and the integrated Translational Health Research Institute of Virginia, iTHRIV. In addition, this week we heard that Dr. Damon Kuehl (Emergency Medicine), University of Pennsylvania and BrainBox Solutions™ were awarded a $3.5 Million NIH SBIR Grant to develop Geriatric Specific Multi-Modality Diagnostic and Prognostic Testing System for mTBI (Concussion). Also, this month other grant applications were submitted to the National Institutes of Health, and we hope that we can share more good news in the near future.

Carilion Clinic TriNetX Training schedule
Carilion offers instructor led, focused training for an in-depth, step-by-step learning experience building patient cohorts and delving into Analytics. The facilitator will be Dee Myers. Please contact HART@carilionclinic.org with the subject of 'TriNetX Training' for training outside of the scheduled sessions.

New Employees
Brian Beverly, BS, Clinical Research Assistant – Emergency Medicine
Brian Beverly is a new clinical research assistant supporting the Emergency Medicine department. Brian served in the United States Marine Corps for 4 years. Afterward, he graduated from VCU with a bachelor’s degree in biology and a minor in chemistry. Since then, Brian has gained experience in the healthcare field as a medical scribe in the urgent care and emergency room setting.
