Dr. Jonathan Carmouche, M.D. - Department of Orthpaedics

Dr. Carmouche is an active researcher in the department of Orthopaedics, where he serves as the Section Chief of Spine, Scoliosis, and Pediatric Orthopaedic Surgery. He is also a Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine, and most recently was appointed the Vice Chair of Research for Orthopaedics.

Dr. Carmouche attended medical school at the George Washington University and completed his Orthopaedic Surgery training and a 1-year fellowship in musculoskeletal research at the University of Rochester.  He completed adult and pediatric spine surgery training at the Twin Cities Spine Center in Minneapolis, MN.  Dr. Carmouche has been with Carilion Clinic for nearly 15 years and has served as the Principal Investigator on more than 20 clinical research projects. He is passionate about mentoring medical student researchers and was awarded Outstanding Research Mentor by the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine in 2018. Dr. Carmouche’s research interests include Cervical myelopathy, spinal fusion surgery, and scoliosis; publishing in journals such as the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery, the Spine Journal, International Journal of Spine Surgery, and the Journal of Neurosurgery – Spine.

In his new role as Vice Chair of Research, he reviews and oversees research activity within the department of Orthopaedics. This includes leading the Musculoskeletal Education Research Center, reviewing research submissions for scientific merit and feasibility, directing the Orthopedic Research Fellows Program, evaluating research resources, and strategic planning. Dr. Carmouche was instrumental in the development and initiation of a Spine Surgery Fellowship beginning in August 2022, further bolstering clinical training and research opportunities in the department of Orthpaedics. His future plans include continuing to grow the research portfolio within Orthopedics and developing the next generation of researchers.
