Carilion Franklin Memorial Hospital Expansion Provides Increased Care Access for Franklin County Residents

Rocky Mount, Va. (Oct. 20, 2022) - Carilion Franklin Memorial Hospital has completed the first phase of an expansion project, making renovations to its operating rooms and pharmacy.

This expansion, which officially began in April 2021, doubled operating room space with two new operating rooms and updated procedure space. In total, the project adds 5,230 square feet of space and updates existing recovery rooms, sterile processing zones, an expanded pharmacy and compounding lab.

“This project allows for improved access to specialty services for the communities that we serve,” said Carl Cline, vice president and administrator of Franklin Memorial Hospital. “Most importantly, it allows our patients to access world-class care without traveling far from home.”

The old operating rooms, which dated back to the 1950s, were approximately 325 square feet in size. The new rooms are more than 600 square feet and equipped with cutting-edge technology, allowing surgical teams to offer more complex procedures close to home for Franklin County residents and beyond.

Expanded specialty services will include OBGYN, hand surgery, plastic surgery, podiatry and more. The second phase of the project will include procedure rooms, staff areas and additional pharmacy updates.

The decision to expand surgical offerings was based on Carilion’s Community Health Assessment, which is conducted every three years. The assessment (which is done for each Carilion hospital) compiles community surveys to help the system prioritize health needs and strategic direction based on the public’s feedback. Consistently, increased access to specialty services and transportation come up as top-identified needs.

“Our goal is to remove barriers to care,” said Cline. “This project is one of several we’re working on to address those community needs and reinforce Franklin Memorial’s role as a convenient, trusted care destination for our community members.”

The renovated spaces are now open and serving patients. To learn more about Franklin Memorial’s offerings, visit CarilionClinic.org.
