Research Milestones

• During a recent monitoring visit, we learned that Carilion is one of the top enrolling sites for PRISM (PI, Dr. Bansal; Research Team Lead, Sarah Morris). PRISM tests the safety and effectiveness of AZD5148 for preventing recurrent C. difficile infections in adults. 

• Last month, the first Carilion participants enrolled to GARDENIA (PI, Dr. Bankole; Research Team Lead, Imran Bashir), SOLARIS-1 (PI, Dr. Self; Research Team Lead, Hailey Snyder), and MAGICAL SV (PI, Dr. Mirza; Research Team Lead, Hanaa Abdelazim).  

           _{GARDENIA assesses how well the monoclonal antibody nipocalimab works in participants with moderate to severe systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Nipocalimab decreases circulating IgG levels, including the pathologic autoreactive IgGs and immune complexes associated with SLE.} 

           _{SOLARIS-1 evaluates the safety and efficacy of solbinsiran for lowering triglycerides in people with severely high blood lipid levels. Solbinsiran is a conjugated small interfering RNA (siRNA) that targets hepatic lipid metabolism, decreasing the production of triglycerides and LDL-C.} 

           _{MAGICAL SV investigates the safety and efficacy of using a sirolimus-coated balloon catheter in the treatment of coronary small-artery stenosis. Sirolimus (also known as rapamycin) has an antiproliferative effect, to help prevent restenosis after angioplasty.} 

• 20vPnC, the Pfizer pneumococcal vaccine trial, welcomed a new site PI: Valerie Renard, PhD. Dr. Renard also is site PI for GOAT and CONFORMATION-HF, which will open for enrollment soon. 20vPnC also is active at CFMH, where Dr. Mikesh Shah is site PI and Desheda Dobbins-Watkins is Research Team Lead. To date, 27 participants have enrolled to 20vPnC at CFMH. 

• In addition, participants were randomized and underwent procedures for both EMPOWER (PI, Dr. Foerst; Research Team Lead, Kwabena Odei-Kumi) and ALLAY-HFrEF (PI, Dr. Pauly; Research Team Lead, Zoe Dunlap), and the first participant underwent imaging and randomization for ACCLAIM-CTA (PI, Dr. Wahid; Research Team Lead, Chinonso Eziechi). EMPOWER and ALLAY-HFrEF are Cardiology trials; ACCLAIM-CTA is part of the Inpatient Research portfolio.
