Research October 2024 Newsletter
Colleagues,
The Carilion Clinic fiscal year (FY) started on October 1st. As we launch in FY25, The Department of Research and Development and other organization stakeholders have spent FY24, striving to improve processes to accelerate research endeavors for both internal projects and those involving collaborations with external parties. You will learn about many of these initiatives and early achievements in the coming months. In addition to streamlining processes, we have embarked on mechanisms to improve our financial performance in research by evaluating how we select clinical trials, draft budgets, and most importantly provide information to our Principal Investigators so that informed decisions on trial performance can be assessed. Many of these processes are being developed in coordination with the Workday integration. Stay tuned!
The start of the fiscal year also aligns with the launch of our Request for Applications (RFA) for our Research Acceleration Program (RAP). This year marks the 20th year of continued funding from our leadership. Please see the announcement in this newsletter. Applications are due December 2nd by 5:00 pm EST.

Mental Health Awareness Week & World Mental Health Day
This year, alongside the World Federation for Mental Health, the founders of World Mental Health Day, NAMI is recognizing the importance of prioritizing mental health in the workplace. This year's theme for Mental Illness Awareness Week and World Mental Health Day is “My Mental Health at Work.” NAMI has created graphics and sample captions designed to help you spread the word about My Mental Health at Work during this Mental Illness Awareness Week - check them out HERE
October is filled with mental health awareness events, information sharing, and education on mental health illnesses, screenings, and prevention. The following are observed throughout October (with links to details):

Join us as we showcase our iTHRIV Scholars at the 7th Annual iTHRIV Scholars Clinical Translational Research Symposium on Tuesday, October 29th at 1:00 PM. The symposium includes research presentations from iTHRIV Scholars from our 2022 and 2023 cohorts, including Dr. Shannon Armbruster from the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology at Carilion Clinic.

New R&D Employee's
Zoe Dunlap, B.A., Clinical Research Coordinator II – Cardiology
Zoe is our team's new clinical research coordinator supporting the Department of Cardiology. She obtained her bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry at Roanoke College, where she participated in undergraduate research studying computational physical chemistry and neuroscience. Since graduating in 2023, Zoe has worked as a Clinical Research Coordinator and Medical Assistant. She joins our team with experience in retrospective, investigator-initiated research studies and industry-sponsored clinical trials.
Current R&D Job Openings
The Clinical Research Coordinator will support a grant funded project at Carilion Clinic in the assigned department. Basic responsibilities include supporting research investigators/physicians with guidance on research policies and processes, enabling successful collaborations with research sponsors, monitoring and tracking study progress, study design assistance, regulatory submission and maintenance, research subject visit management, obtaining tissue specimens for processing, and any other research-related duties, as necessary.
Clinical Research Coordinator - Emergency Medicine
Clinical Research Assistant assists with administrative activities associated with the conduct of research studies including industry sponsored, investigator initiated, grant funded, or internally funded studies while maintaining compliance with guidelines set by governing agencies and institutional policy. This position will be assigned to support minimal risk or non-interventional studies, unless assigned to serve in a support function for greater than minimal risk studies that also include a Clinical Research Coordinator or Clinical Research Nurse.

Carilion Clinic TriNetX Virtual Training Schedule
Carilion offers instructor-led, focused training for an in-depth, step-by-step learning experience building patient cohorts and delving into Analytics. The facilitator will be Dee Myers. Please get in touch with HART@carilionclinic.org with the subject of 'TriNetX Training' for training outside of the scheduled sessions. If you haven’t taken a class or need a refresher, this is your opportunity to do so! Let Dee Myers know which date you prefer and she will send a meeting invitation.
