Colleagues,

This past week, academic medical centers, hospitals, contract research organizations, and the pharmaceutical industry recognized the contributions of research professionals pursuing clinical trials around the world. The goal of this event is to raise awareness of the importance of clinical trials and to recognize the personnel involved in these endeavors. Every one of us has benefited from the advances made through past clinical trials but, more importantly, we need to give a special thanks to the volunteers who agree to participate in a clinical trial. The reasons for participation are numerous including the desire to seek a new experimental therapy or treatment that may be lifesaving. Others choose to participate for altruistic purposes even when participating will not benefit them personally. We are extremely fortunate at Carilion Clinic that our physicians and healthcare providers are invited to perform clinical trials, thus bringing novel therapies to our patients before they are available to the public. The pursuit of clinical trial research supports our values, namely: Collaboration through the teamwork exhibited by the health care provider working closely with our clinical research personnel. Commitment to the clinical trial process can in some cases extend months or years past initial enrollment or initiation of treatment. Compassion by seeking potentially new and more effective ways to care for our patients. Courage to explore treatment options that are novel and need additional evaluation. Curiosity to take on the added responsibilities and tasks of a clinical trial in addition to their normal clinical obligations. In conclusion, thank you for your efforts.
