Adolescent and Young Adult Medicine

The years between childhood and adulthood bring many changes in physical, mental, and behavioral health.
At Carilion Children's, our adolescent medicine team provides care designed to support preteens, teens, and young adults through every stage of growth and development.
Roanoke City students can receive care at our in-school clinics at Patrick Henry and William Fleming high schools. Patients ages 10 – 26 from any school district can also be seen at our adolescent medicine location.
Adolescent medicine provides primary care for preteens, teens, and young adults ages 10 – 26. We offer wellness visits, sick visits, sports physicals, school forms, and follow-up care while providing whole-person care for the physical, mental, and behavioral health needs that can arise as young people grow into adulthood.

Preventive care
Our wellness exams cover everything your teens need so stay physically and mentally well. Our preventive care includes:
- Routine screenings: We check their height, weight, and body mass index, or BMI, to make sure they're growing as they should and in a healthful manner. We also take their blood pressure to help protect their heart health. Blood work checks for anemia, tuberculosis, high cholesterol, and type 2 diabetes. We also provide hearing and vision screenings.
- Mental health screening: Teens and young adults face many transitions and life stressors that can affect their mental health. It’s no surprise that teens aged 13 – 18 have the highest rate of mental illness of any age group. We help catch mental health issues early, so we can get your teen the help they need to thrive. We also screen teens for suicide risk to get them emergency care.
- Behavioral health screening: We provide ADHD screening for teens. We also go over their drug and alcohol use to prevent substance use disorders.
- Vaccinations: We give shots that prevent common diseases. Ones your teen may need include vaccines for chickenpox, the flu, HPV, polio, meningitis and those for hepatitis A and B. We also give combination vaccines for measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR), and tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis (Tdap).
School, sports, and camp physical exams
We provide comprehensive exams to make sure your teen is safe to participate in sports and other physical activities. We also provide necessary vaccines needed to attend school, sport, and camp programs.
Mental health counseling
Teenage anxiety and depression are common mental health issues. We provide counseling for these and other mental health issues.
The teen years are also a time when many kids start taking risks or experimenting. We counsel your teens on the dangers of alcohol, drug, and tobacco use. We also go over sun safety and the risks of skin cancer.
Sexual and reproductive health counseling
Our OB/GYNs for teens counsels teens and young adults on a range of issues that affect their sexual and reproductive health. This includes education on peer pressure, intimate partner violence, sexually transmitted infections, and safer sex practices.
We can also provide contraceptive care for teens who need it. Your teen may need these medicines to help manage heavy or painful periods. They can also help prevent unplanned pregnancies in teens and young adults who are sexually active.
For teens and young adults who are sexually active, we can screen for STIs. Common STI screenings include chlamydia, gonorrhea, HIV, and syphilis.
