Increased stroke severity and mortality in patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection: An analysis from the N3C database.

Studies from early in the COVID-19 pandemic showed that patients with ischemic stroke and concurrent SARS-CoV-2 infection had increased stroke severity. We examined the hypothesis that an association between SARS-CoV-2 infection and ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke persisted throughout the first year of the pandemic, and that concurrent infection was associated with longer hospitalizations and increased mortality compared to non-infected stroke patients.

Dr. Southerland is a Harrison Distinguished Teaching Professor, and Professor of Neurology and Public Health Sciences at the University of Virginia. He received his M.D. from the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University and completed Neurology Residency and Vascular Neurology Fellowship with a Master’s of Clinical Science at the University of Virginia. He is the past recipient of an early career award from the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association (AHA/ASA) National Clinical Research Program and has served as principal investigator for numerous clinical studies focused in the field of stroke and cerebrovascular disease. Dr. Southerland also serves as Executive Vice Chair and Residency Program Director for the UVA Department of Neurology.
