Isaiah M. Johnson, M.D., promoted to chair of Obstetrics and Gynecology

Dr. Johnson has been a practicing OB/GYN with Carilion since 2009 and has served as interim chair of OB/GYN since 2021.

Since his arrival, Dr. Johnson has garnered the respect of his colleagues, students and residents for his clinical acumen and collaborative excellence. He is a practicing OB/GYN specialist engaged in the full scope of care, with a particular interest in helping patients who have high-risk pregnancies. Throughout his career, Dr. Johnson has steadily taken on more administrative roles in the department to support the OB/GYN clerkship, residency program, quality and safety programs. He is a fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and was selected in 2019 to be a specialty certification examiner for the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

Dr. Johnson is a graduate of the University of Florida College of Medicine, where he was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honors Society in 2002 and earned his M.D. with honors in 2003. He completed the OB/GYN residency program at University of Florida in 2007 and has spent considerable time training the next generation of physicians, including OB/GYN and family practice residents. Dr. Johnson has served as a specialty or research mentor for many advisees and has received numerous awards for his teaching locally and nationally, including the prestigious national faculty award for excellence from the Council on Residency Education in Obstetrics and Gynecology in 2021. He has served as a reviewer for OB/GYN specialty journals and is currently a participating faculty member in a multi-center, prospective randomized trial in support of perinatal mental health in obstetric settings. He teaches medical students and residents at the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine and is currently a candidate for promotion to associate professor.

Neil A MacDonald, MD_IMG_0152

Neil Macdonald, M.D., named chair of the new Department of Anesthesiology

Dr. Macdonald has been practicing anesthesiology with Carilion since 1994 and is active in direct patient care, focusing on the pediatric population. He teaches medical students and residents as an Assistant Professor at the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine. He has served as Medical Director of Anesthesia for Carilion since 2013.

Dr. Macdonald has a strong background in administration and medical staff affairs, having served in many leadership roles, including Chief of the Department of Anesthesia and Chief of Staff at Carilion Medical Center. He graduated from the University of Southern California and earned his M.P.H. and M.D. from the University of Michigan. He completed his residency and research fellowship in anesthesiology at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center.

The activity level and demand for anesthesia providers at Carilion revealed the need to create a department to support existing anesthesia staff further and expand opportunities for CRNAs, medical students and residents, particularly given the national shortage of anesthesia providers. Carilion is beginning the foundational work to develop a residency training program in anesthesiology, and efforts are underway to create a department of anesthesiology within the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine.
