Throughout his career, Dr. Johnson has steadily taken on more administrative roles in the department to support the OB/GYN clerkship, residency program, quality and safety programs. He is a fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and was selected in 2019 to be a specialty certification examiner for the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

Neil Macdonald, M.D., named chair of the new Department of Anesthesiology
Dr. Macdonald has been practicing anesthesiology with Carilion since 1994 and is active in direct patient care, focusing on the pediatric population. He teaches medical students and residents as an Assistant Professor at the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine. He has served as Medical Director of Anesthesia for Carilion since 2013.
Dr. Macdonald has a strong background in administration and medical staff affairs, having served in many leadership roles, including Chief of the Department of Anesthesia and Chief of Staff at Carilion Medical Center. He graduated from the University of Southern California and earned his M.P.H. and M.D. from the University of Michigan. He completed his residency and research fellowship in anesthesiology at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center.
The activity level and demand for anesthesia providers at Carilion revealed the need to create a department to support existing anesthesia staff further and expand opportunities for CRNAs, medical students and residents, particularly given the national shortage of anesthesia providers. Carilion is beginning the foundational work to develop a residency training program in anesthesiology, and efforts are underway to create a department of anesthesiology within the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine.
