John Jane Jr., M.D., joins Carilion Clinic as the first chair of the newly formed Department of Neurosurgery

John Jane, MD

Carilion Clinic today announced the appointment of John A. Jane Jr., M.D. as the first chair of the newly formed Department of Neurosurgery. Dr. Jane will begin on June 19.

"Dr. Jane will join a strong neurosurgical team at Carilion," said interim Carilion Chief Medical Officer Dr. Daniel Harrington. "We’re excited to continue expanding our program with such a capable leader."

Dr. Jane comes to Carilion from UVA Health, where he specializes in the treatment of Pituitary tumors and minimally invasive techniques to the brain.  He has written extensively on the treatment and outcomes after pituitary surgery and has earned a national and international reputation. Over the course of his career, he’s held many leadership positions including director of Pediatric Neurosurgery, director of pituitary surgery, outpatient medical director of Neurosurgery and residency program director. He has also served on the editorial board of the Journal of Neurosurgery and was president of the Neurosurgical Societies of the Virginias.

He is also a professor of Neurosurgery and Pediatrics at University of Virginia School of Medicine. After joining Carilion, he will eventually serve as chair of the academic department of neurosurgery at the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine once it is approved and established.

A Virginia native, Dr. Jane received his undergraduate degree from the University of Chicago and attended medical school at the University of Virginia, where he also completed his general surgery internship and neurosurgical residency.  He returned to UVA Health after a year of fellowship at the renowned Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto.

Mark Miller

Carilion’s Vice President of Orthopaedic Surgery Mark Miller will serve as the new vice president of the Department of Neurosurgery, in addition to his current role. He is a graduate of Cornell University, where he received a bachelor of science in Policy Analysis and Management. He received a master of Health Services Administration from the University of Michigan and a master of Finance from the University of Colorado.

Neurosurgery is a medical specialty providing comprehensive, multidisciplinary care for adults and children suffering from diseases and disorders of the brain, spinal cord, spine and peripheral nerves. Carilion’s neurosurgery program has been growing rapidly since its inception in 2003 and already maintains a comprehensive team of surgeons, residents and advanced clinical care practitioners. The team provides care at the Institute for Orthopaedics and Neurosciences in Roanoke.

The new department was created as demand for neurosurgical services has increased in the last few years. It is expected to enhance, grow and allow new opportunities for clinical trials with this new designation and leadership.
