Final Beam Raised at Crystal Spring Tower

Carilion Clinic leaders and construction firms Robins & Morton and Branch Builds joined together Monday, Dec. 4, to raise the final beam of the new Crystal Spring Tower. The topping out ceremony was one of the final steps toward completing the state-of-the-art expansion, adding more than 500,000 square feet to the region’s only Level 1 trauma center, Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital.

Alongside other innovations, the new tower adds a Cardiovascular Institute and expanded Emergency Department to the hospital. These new clinical spaces will be home to additional operating rooms, trauma bays, and laboratories, all of which allow Carilion to continue meeting the healthcare needs of the growing region.

“Just as exciting is what takes place inside our buildings — the amazing care our providers and staff deliver, and the training and research that push the boundaries of what is possible,” said Nancy Howell Agee, Carilion CEO. “To make care available for more people, we’re embracing innovative, new technologies and expanding and updating our facilities. The Crystal Spring Tower represents the care of the future.”

The project is centered on assuring that Virginians can receive world-class care close to home.

“The Crystal Spring Tower has been a tremendous communal effort,” said Senior Vice President Michael Abbott. “As its construction progresses, we extend our thanks to the dedicated staff and stakeholders who have supported Carilion in reaching this milestone. Together, we are building a healthier future for our community and for the region.”

Employees gathered to sign the beam and count down before it was finally raised into place. The exterior of the tower is expected to be complete in early 2024. Following continued interior renovations, the tower is planned to officially open in 2025.
