R&D Clinical Research Managers
The Department of Research and Development is responsible for the administrative management of over 120 clinical research studies at Carilion Clinic. This includes contracting, finance, regulatory compliance, grant management and the conduct of the trial, including research coordination. Much of this effort is undertaken by two Clinical Research Managers.
Danielle Guilliams is one of the two Clinical Research Managers for Carilion Clinic’s Research and Development. She oversees the central Research and Development Clinical Research Coordinators (CRCs) along with the CRCs supporting Emergency Medicine, Surgery, Orthopaedics, Cardiothoracic Surgery, the Aortic Center, Gynecology/Oncology, and the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine. In addition to managing her group of CRCs, Danielle’s primary responsibilities include research study oversight, conducting internal feasibility meetings for new trials, and working with ancillary departments to setup the accounts and Epic builds needed for new studies. With a Bachelor of Science in Engineering Science and Mechanics and a Masters in Biomedical Engineering from Virginia Tech, Danielle became a Biomechanics Laboratory Coordinator at Wake Forest University in 2013 in the Health and Exercise Science Department, working on three different clinical trials investigating the effects of strength training to prevent overuse injuries in female runners, to determine the differences between runners who sustain an overuse injury and those who remain injury free, and strength training for arthritis. Danielle began her career at Carilion Clinic as a Clinical Research Coordinator in 2017, working primarily with Virginia Tech Carilion medical students, before becoming a Clinical Research Manager. On a more personal note, Danielle is the wife of Dr. Evin Guilliams, a sixth-year Neurosurgery resident, and mom to two-year-old Owen.
Rochelle Brown is Carilion Clinic’s second Clinical Research Manager on the Research and Development administrative team. She supervises a team of 13 Clinical Research Nurses, Research Coordinators, and Research Assistants within the Departments of Medicine, Psychiatry, Radiology, and Pediatrics. She is responsible for the day-to-day operational activities of her team, as well as coordinating staff recruitment, training, development, and annual performance management. Rochelle assists the Clinical Trials Director with workload planning, staff resource management, as well as coverage analysis of clinical trials in the start-up phase, CTMS/Epic study builds and other start-up activities, as needed. Rochelle’s extensive clinical research experience began in 2013 as a Clinical Research Coordinator with Carilion managing trials concentrated in psychiatry, neurology, and diabetes while serving as a member of the Research Marketing and Technology & Process Improvement internal committees. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Biology with a Chemistry and History minor from the University of Pittsburgh, as well as a Certificate in Conceptual Foundations of Medicine. Rochelle went on to obtain a Masters in Public Health with a concentration in Chronic Disease Epidemiology from the same university with a Certificate in Minority Health and Health Disparities.
