Carilion's Roanoke Campus, which includes Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital and Carilion Roanoke Community Hospital, has received the Focused Verification designation from the American College of Surgeons (ACS) Quality Verification Program (QVP).

Carilion is the second health system in Virginia, and one of only 17 in the nation, to receive the Focused Verification designation.

The QVP offers hospitals a proven, standardized method for establishing, measuring and improving their quality structure across all surgical departments. Being an ACS Quality Partner demonstrates Carilion’s commitment to giving their surgical teams the tools and resources they need—like the best data, expert input and proven processes—so they can deliver the highest quality care.

“Our job as a surgical quality department is to ensure patient outcomes are as good as possible and to always strive to be better,” said Dr. Jacob Gillen, Carilion’s Associate Chief Quality Officer and Medical Director of Surgical Quality. “The ACS has a long history of helping patient care providers and health care organizations improve how they care for patients. Working with them is an amazing opportunity to have access to their expertise and tools to examine our systems and processes. It’s an honor to be recognized with this prestigious designation.”

After nearly a year of reviewing surgical processes and outcomes for every specialty and collecting documents and data from departments across the health system to submit to ACS, Carilion had an extensive two-day virtual visit with the ACS that included surgeon interviews and an examination of leadership and quality structure, physician credentials and peer reviews.

“Participating in the QVP has given our medical center a more comprehensive understanding of the processes and resources we have in place to provide the best care to our patients,” said Dr. T.A. Lucktong, Carilion’s Co-Director of Surgical Quality. “Being an ACS Surgical Quality Partner signifies our center’s commitment to patient care that aligns with the highest standards in surgical quality.”
