Carilion Rockbridge Community Hospital Board Announcement

Carilion Rockbridge Community Hospital recently appointed three new board members and a new board chair who will each help support the not-for-profit’s work to improve the health of the communities that it serves.

“We’re excited to expand our board with members who will bring diverse expertise and insight into the work that we do,” said Vice President and Hospital Administrator Greg Madsen. “I look forward to working alongside these respected community leaders to continue to strengthen our region’s care.”

Colonel James “Jay” Williams Jr., VMI’s emergency management coordinator, was appointed chair of the board. Col. Williams has a history of working and collaborating with Carilion Rockbridge, including his service as a board member since 2016.

The new board members will begin their three-year terms effective Jan. 1, 2021. The three new board members are:

  • Amy K. DeHart, Internship Director for the Shepherd Higher Education Consortium on Poverty (SHECP). Before joining SHECP in 2014, she was Assistant Director at VMI's Center for Leadership and Ethics. She worked for VMI for 15 years, developing programing for government and private sector professionals in addition to cadets. She grew up in suburban Maryland and earned her BA from Earlham College.

  • P. Duaine Fitzgerald, Retired from the Bank of Botetourt. A Rockbridge County native, Duaine served as a banker in the area for more than four decades before retiring in 2017. He has volunteered extensively in the community, including roles with the Dabney S. Lancaster Foundation Board, Rockbridge Area Board of Social Services, Treasurer of Buena Vista Baptist Church, and acting as a member of Rockbridge County Industrial Development Authority.

  • Alvin N. “Al” Hockaday, Retired Sergeant Major with the Virginia Military Institute Corps of Cadets. Many in the community know Al and his wife as the former co-owners of The Shenandoah Attic and The Victorian Parlour, running both for nearly 29 years before selling them in 2018. He is a Richmond, Va. native and served in the U.S. Marine Corps for more than three decades.

Alicia S. Devine, M.D., will also join the board by virtue of her new role as Chief of Staff at Carilion Rockbridge. Dr. Devine joined Carilion Rockbridge Community Hospital as an emergency medicine physician in 2018, becoming the medical director of the hospital’s emergency department the following year.

Carilion Rockbridge would also like to acknowledge and thank the outgoing board members Dr. Larry Boetsch; Bobby Berkstresser; Dr. Richard Teaff, outgoing chair; and Matt Burton, MD, outgoing Chief of Staff for their service.
