Carilion's Roanoke Campus Receives Fifth Magnet® Recognition

Summary

Only one percent of hospitals have more than four recognitions. Carilion is the first in Virginia to receive the honor five consecutive times.

Carilion's Roanoke Campus, which includes Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital and Carilion Roanoke Community Hospital, has received Magnet designation from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) for the fifth time.

Magnet status is awarded to nursing programs that encourage the highest level of development for its nurses and the highest level of treatment for its patients. It is the highest honor a nursing program can receive from the ANCC.

Of all of the Magnet hospitals across the country, only one percent have more than four recognitions. Carilion is the only in Virginia to receive the honor five consecutive times, representing more than twenty years of nursing quality and expertise.

“If this does not show how excellent our nurses are here —and honestly, across our system—I’m not sure what does,” said Pam Lindsey, the director of Carilion's Magnet program. “Five straight designations is a rare accomplishment across our nation. And we have it right here at Carilion."

Several members and leaders of Carilion's nursing staff gathered in Roanoke on Jan. 18 to celebrate the recognition.

“We are pleased to again achieve Magnet status, a strong accomplishment made stronger by the fact that our Roanoke program has maintained Magnet status for more than twenty years,” said Tami Frost, Chief Nursing Officer for Carilion. “During that time, patients from Virginia, West Virginia and beyond have trusted in our nurses’ expert care and steadfast dedication to excellence.”
