Carilion Clinic Research Day 2022
The 15th Annual Research Day was held virtually on April 5, 2022 with numerous local institutions represented.
- Research Day highlights research efforts from Carilion Clinic, the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute, Virginia Tech, Radford University Carilion and the Salem Veterans Administration Medical Center.
- This was the 15th annual event.
- We received more than 72 abstracts from faculty, professionals, residents/fellows and students. More than 122 attendees pre-registered for the event and heard 30 presentations.
"This is the second year we have held Research Day virtually, and it has allowed us to expand our audience because of the convenience of being able to attend remotely," said Francis Farrell, senior director of Research and Development.
There were 122 people pre-registered for the event, and 72 original research abstracts were submitted (eight by faculty/professionals, 46 by residents/fellows and 18 by students).
The keynote speaker, William Petri, M.D., chief of the Division of Infectious Diseases and International Health, and head of Infectious Diseases at University of Virginia School of Medicine, presented his original research about the development of a new treatment for COVID-19.
Dr. Petri’s research group discovered that some individuals who were being treated with an anti-asthmatic drug fared better than non-asthmatics. They were able to perform proof-of-concept experiments to test safety and efficacy in pre-clinical models. The data was so encouraging that a clinical trial is now underway in people.
