Please congratulate Umar Sofi, MD (Acute Care, Pulmonary, and Sleep Medicine), who is the recipient of the $75,000 Carilion Department of Medicine Faculty Research Award for the 2026–2027 cycle.

Dr. Sofi’s proposal—FRNDS-ARD: Clinical Validation of a Smart Nasal Cannula for Continuous Respiratory Monitoring in Adults with Acute Respiratory Distress—was recognized by the review committee for its clinical significance, scientific rigor, and potential to meaningfully advance care in pulmonary and critical care medicine. Sincere thanks to the reviewers—Drs. Sweet, Bankole, Kerkering, and Wiid—for their time and thoughtful engagement with the applications. This was a competitive cycle, and the quality of the submissions reflects the depth of research talent in the Department of Medicine.

The Department of Medicine’s Research Award is established to support and encourage early-stage investigators who intend to pursue a research-oriented career. By fostering innovative research and underwriting financial, operational, and other resources, the Award enhances the academic growth and career development of emerging researchers, ultimately contributing to advancements in medical science and patient care.
