Carilion Seeks New Medical Rehabilitation Hospital Near Roanoke Campus

On Monday, April 1, Carilion Clinic submitted a Letter of Intent to the Commonwealth of Virginia seeking a Certificate of Public Need (COPN) for an inpatient medical rehabilitation hospital near Carilion's Roanoke campus.

“Currently, our inpatient rehabilitation unit at Carilion Roanoke Community Hospital serves patients who need help recovering from strokes, traumatic injuries and a host of other ailments,” said Nancy Howell Agee, chief executive officer of Carilion. “With an aging population in our region, we have a need for more medical rehabilitation services.”

Should the state approve Carilion’s application and issue a COPN, the proposed 50-bed hospital would be established by relocating 34 medical rehabilitation beds from Carilion Roanoke Community Hospital and adding 16 beds.

Details about the project are being finalized, including where the hospital would be located, the costs associated with the project and the organization’s future plans for continuing patient care at Roanoke Community Hospital. More information will be released as it becomes available.

If the process goes smoothly, the earliest the proposed hospital could open is 2026.
