Center for Simulation, Research, and Patient Safety
We're a 14,000-square-foot, high-fidelity simulation space servicing Carilion Clinic and the local region. The center not only houses our Simulation program, but also our Applied Human Factors team, Usability Works, and Carilion Clinic Innovation. We're also the primary research facility for the Virginia Tech Smart Healthcare Hub. Discover more about these programs.

Simulation Program
Carilion Simulation's mission is to improve the health of the communities we serve.
We do this by using the full spectrum of clinical simulation in trainings and assessment. We provide experiential learning opportunities for healthcare professionals as well as providing simulation-based clinical systems testing to improve operational readiness.

Applied Human Factors
Human factors is a science that explores human capabilities and limitations, and designs work processes that make it easy to do the right thing and hard to do the wrong thing.
Our human factors team works closely with clinicians and patients to improve patient safety and quality of care for all of our patients and staff.

Usability Works
Usability Works is an externally facing usability consultation service for local, state, and regional support of MedTech innovators.
FDA requires that all medical devices have human-centered design principles incorporated in their design documentation. Usability Works utilizes the Carilion Simulation environment and subject matter experts from our system to understand how a product will be used (or misused) and provide feedback to innovators to make their products easy and safe to use.

Carilion Clinic Innovation
Carilion Innovation is a catalytic agent and resource for our innovators.
Our physicians, nurses, and staff make unique discoveries through their research and continuous improvements to the care they provide our communities. Some of these discoveries are innovations with commercial potential.

Virginia Tech Smart Healthcare Hub
The Virginia Tech Smart Healthcare Hub is an interdepartmental workgroup of researchers created by the Destination Area program at Virginia Tech.
The group conducts innovative research on implementing healthcare technologies to create safer and more effective care for patients and better experiences for caregivers, using a human-centered approach.
