Rheumatology Care

Rheumatology focuses on diseases that happen because of chronic inflammation. This includes conditions that cause joint swelling and pain, like arthritis, gout and lupus.
Many of the conditions we treat are autoimmune diseases. This means your immune system attacks parts of your body, such as joints, blood vessels, skin or other organs.
At Carilion Clinic, we work closely with other experts to help manage all of your symptoms. We offer second opinions, and we do research to help advance new treatments and medicines.
Conditions We Treat
We treat the range of autoimmune and inflammatory conditions, from the common to the highly complex. We see these conditions most often at Carilion:
Rheumatoid and Other Inflammatory Arthritis
When the body’s immune system attacks the joints, it causes pain and inflammation. These chronic diseases get worse over time, but certain medicines can help.Gout and Pseudogout
These crystal-induced arthritis conditions cause flares of pain and swelling in the joints, but have different causes and treatments.Lupus and Related Autoimmune Conditions
Diseases in which the immune system mistakenly attacks the body, causing a wide variety of symptoms. Conditions include lupus, Raynaud’s and Sjögren’s.Vasculitis
A group of rare diseases where the immune system attacks blood vessels, which can affect circulation and cause swelling and organ damage.

Treatments We Offer
You may need a mix of medicines and treatments to help manage your symptoms. These are some of the most common treatments your care team might prescribe:
Infusion Therapy
Some cancer and autoimmune medicines need to go directly into your bloodstream. You’ll get these medicines at one of our 6 infusion centers.Joint Injections for Pain
Image-guided injections add medicine directly into the joint to help with pain and inflammation from inflammatory arthritis, osteoarthritis and sports injuries.Immunosuppressive Therapy
Medicines that treat autoimmune conditions like arthritis and lupus suppress the immune system. You may need to make some lifestyle changes to avoid infections.
