Carilion Children’s Hematology and Oncology offers chronic transfusion therapy. Chronic transfusion therapy is a form of blood transfusion that is repeated on a regular basis and is used to treat serious symptoms or prevent complications related to sickle cell disease.

Violet M. Borowicz, M.D., leads the palliative care program at Carilion Children’s. The role of pediatric palliative care is to improve quality of life for any child diagnosed with a chronic or life-threatening illness through continuity of care, symptom management and psychosocial support.

The Child Life Program is managed by a team of individuals specifically trained and certified to help children, adolescents, and families understand the illness, necessary treatment plan, and hospitalization. The Child Life Program is the only program of its kind in Western Virginia.
