Palliative Care

Serious illness can change your daily life. Pain, fatigue, and worry can make each day harder. You and your family may feel unsure where to turn or how to talk about what matters most.
Palliative care helps support you and your family during serious illness. This care helps ease symptoms and reduce stress for everyone. It can start early, and you’ll keep getting your regular treatments.
Carilion Clinic’s palliative care experts work alongside your other care teams. We help you feel better, understand your choices, and plan next steps.
Palliative care supports you when you’re seriously ill by helping teams focus on what matters most day to day. Our palliative care teams work alongside your other treatment teams. At Carilion, palliative care includes:

- Emotional and spiritual support: Care helps with worry, fear, low mood, and spiritual concerns
- Care planning: Teams help guide goals and care wishes and may connect families to advance care planning services when helpful
Palliative care at Carilion is available in the hospital, in outpatient clinics, and in other care settings. In some cases, care takes place in the Palliative Care Unit at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital.
Your care team adjusts to your needs. Depending on the situation, the team may include doctors, nurses, social workers, counselors, and chaplains. Our teams work together to support you and those caring for you.
Caregivers play an important role in palliative care. We encourage your family and other caregivers to share what they see day to day and take part in planning for your future care.
