Inpatient geriatric care helps support you and your loved one during a hospital stay. At Carilion Clinic, this care comes from a geriatric team trained to support older adults. We work alongside hospital doctors, nurses, and palliative care teams.
Our job is to help you understand changes, lower risk, and plan next steps that fit daily life. This care takes place only in the hospital. It supports the hospital team and primary care. It doesn’t replace them.

Inpatient geriatric care may include:
- Inpatient consults: We look at health concerns, memory, mood, and daily tasks and share guidance with the hospital team.
- Medicine and symptom support: We check current medicine to help lower side effects, confusion and fall risk, and support comfort during the stay.
- Care planning: We can help you talk through care goals and future needs, and record care wishes when helpful.
- Palliative care support: When serious illness affects comfort or care goals, we bring in the palliative care team to support symptom relief and care planning.
- Support for caregivers: We share updates, answer questions, and help you prepare for next steps.
