VOM 1

Valley Occupational Medicine announced today that it had joined Carilion Clinic. The transaction was completed last month.

”I’m pleased the Valley Occupational Medicine team is joining the Carilion Occupational Health family,” said Dr. Darrell Powledge, MD, MPH, owner of Valley Occupational Medicine. ”Combining our services for workplace injuries and illnesses further helps area employers provide care for their employees so they can return to work as soon as possible.”

Incorporating Valley Occupational Medicine into Carilion Occupational Health will offer several benefits to Valley Occupational Medicine’s clients and patients, including greater access to Carilion’s network of health care providers. Carilion began offering occupational health services with the opening of its clinic at Carilion Roanoke Community Hospital in 1985. Valley Occupational Medicine was established in 2001.

Through the years, Carilion and Valley Occupational Medicine have encouraged area businesses to invest in and prioritize their employees' well-being, which can lead to higher productivity, lower health care costs, fewer sick days, improved retention and many other benefits. Services include physical exams, on-site nursing, substance abuse testing, safety training, workplace evaluations, health and wellness programs and more.

In addition, Valley Occupational Medicine patients will be able to take advantage of Carilion’s MyChart online patient portal. MyChart allows patients to access their medical records at any time and to exchange secure messages with their primary care doctor and others on their health care team. MyChart is also the basis of the patient-centered medical home model of primary care, which Carilion has practiced since 2011.

“We are thrilled to begin this journey with Valley Occupational Medicine as Dr. Powledge retires,” said Nancy Howell Agee, president and CEO of Carilion. “Welcoming health care professionals who are as enthusiastic about a patient-centered approach to health care as we are is a perfect match for Carilion and this community.”

In Roanoke, Valley Occupational Medicine operates a McDowell Avenue, N.E. clinic. Details of the acquisition are complete, and the transition should be seamless for Valley Occupational Medicine’s clients and patients.

About Valley Occupational Medicine

Valley Occupational Medicine’s mission is to provide quality and responsive service to all workers and employers. We have the educational expertise and the hands-on experience that is only gained from a combination of medical training and years of experience to provide the highest quality Occupational Medicine services. Our medical providers have an aggregate of 100+ years of experience providing occupational medicine services, and we collaborate daily to provide the very best in medical care.

We understand the concerns of employers regarding the medical and indemnity costs incurred with work-related injuries. We know that early return to work in a safe capacity is in the best interest of the employer and the employee, and we work diligently with employers to achieve that goal. It is essential to understand that even though delayed recovery injuries account for only about 20% of workers’ compensation injuries, they are responsible for 80% of worker’s compensation costs. Therefore, it is critical to identify injured workers early and manage their care correctly to reduce the risk of delayed recovery and the far more significant expense incurred with such cases.

Our medical providers also perform a comprehensive list of medical exams to meet the Occupational Medicine needs of employers at a competitive price.
