Department of Neurosurgery
About
Program Overview
Carilion's Department of Neurosurgery has been growing rapidly since its inception in 2003, and we are proud to serve our patients with a team of nine fellowship-trained neurosurgeons, seven resident neurosurgeons, six specialized physician assistants and five nurse practitioners. In addition, we have over 45 office staff members in the neurosurgical ambulatory practice that plays an integral part in patient coordination, education and throughput. In addition to Roanoke, our team provides care at satellite locations in Blacksburg, Giles, Hillsville, Martinsville and Wytheville. Surgical treatment is available at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital, Carilion New River Valley Medical Center, Carilion Franklin Memorial Hospital and soon, Carilion Rockbridge Community Hospital.
Our neurosurgeons perform about 2,000 brain and spine surgeries each year, and we use a team approach to treatment involving many specialists. Diagnostic resources include high-field MRI, open MRI, MRI spectroscopy, functional MRI and tractography, CT angiography, PET scan and micro-angiography.
Carilion's neurosurgery team is also dedicated to research, clinical trials and education. The team has actively participated in advanced care practitioner nursing and medical student education for years.
Mission, Goals and Strengths
