Overview

About one in twelve American adults experienced a substance use disorder, resulting in tremendous individual, family and community morbidity and mortality. At Carillion Clinic, we address substance use disorders as complex and chronic ailments that rarely are resolved by a single intervention such as detoxification. Although detoxification is not sufficient, it is often a necessary first step before true healing can begin. Our team of experts are interested in developing new ways to understand and treat addictive disorders through treatment, research, and education.

We treat people with substance abuse disorders in multiple ways:

  • Medically safe detoxification is done in one of our 61 adult beds (across two facilities) or 16 adolescent beds. Part of the inpatient stay is not simply stabilization but also preparation for the hard therapy of changing lifestyles.
  • We use public and private support networks and intensive outpatient programs.
  • Office-Based Opioid Treatment (OBOT) involves receiving medication to stabilize addictive urges as well as participating in organized group therapy with others. Treatment can be paired with primary care or ob-gyn care.

Additional innovations in treatment include the use of peer recovery specialists and offering a path to recovery through our ED Bridge to Treatment program. And ourĀ START NOW training program assists individuals who present with mood dysregulation, impulsivity (including self-injurious behavior), aggression, addictions, and/or interpersonal discord.

The Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine faculty includes psychiatrists who are board-certified in both addiction psychiatry and the new specialty of addiction medicine.
