Biography

Dr. Fortuna has been a part of the residency program since its inception and this was a pivotal part in his decision to relocate here. The opportunity to help build a residency program from the ground up and work in a system with such potential for growth has been well worth it. He has always believed in the crucial role that simulation contributes to medical education and serves as the Medical Director for the simulation center at Carilion Clinic. His efforts lead to the opening of a new 10,000 square foot multidisciplinary stimulation facility. Education through simulation is vital to residents' training and ultimately leads to improved patient care. Simulation also lends itself to other avenues of research and his interest include studying team performance, cardiac arrest resuscitation, and physician decision making. Away from work he stays busy with his family and two young children and is an avid triathlete.
