Grow Our Own
We offer several training programs throughout the year to help employees grow and advance their skills. Trainees engaged in these programs are paid for their time in the program. Careers in Nursing
Our nurses play a key role in every part of patient care. No matter your position, your voice and ideas matter.
Whether you're just starting out or have years of experience, we’re here to help you keep learning and growing.
- Our SOAR nurse externship is a unique clinical work experience where you have the opportunity to witness day-to-day life of a nurse in various clinical settings and to expand clinical time to put didactic concepts into learned reality.
- New grads and nurses with less than a year of experience can take part in our year-long Nurse Residency Program for extra support as they begin their careers.
- For experienced nurses, we offer instructor-led and online courses, special programs and conferences to help you stay sharp and adapt to changes in healthcare.

Careers in Nursing Support
There are a wide range of nursing support roles available in both inpatient and outpatient settings. Some positions, like patient care technicians, are entry-level and offer on-the-job training. Others, such as medical assistants, require certification. These roles can lead to a rewarding career in healthcare and serve as a strong foundation for future advancement.

Careers in Pharmacy
At Carilion, pharmacy is about more than just filling prescriptions. Our team plays an active role in patient care, and there are many ways to start and grow your career—from beginning as a pharmacy tech in training to advancing to certified pharmacist roles. Careers in Emergency Services
We offer emergency services across the region in our clinics, hospitals and through medical transport. Providing emergency care is a thrilling and rewarding calling. Begin your career as an EMT, paramedic, or in an entry-level role as an ambulance support associate, then advance to an EMT through our Grow Our Own education program.

Careers in Police and Security
Carilion has its own state-recognized law enforcement agency with about 68 sworn police officers serving our campus, along with 101 security officers handling non-police duties. If you’re driven to protect and serve, we offer paths for certified officers and those starting in security or in our police recruit position (offered 2 times a year). Wherever you begin, we’re here to help you grow your career.

Careers in Allied Health/Therapies
Allied health and therapy professionals are essential to our care teams. From physical therapists and radiologic technologists to respiratory therapists and lab specialists, these roles help patients heal, recover, and thrive.
For those not yet certified, start in an entry-level position such as rad tech assistant and advance to a limited radiologic technologist through our Grow Our Own program. Or start as a respiratory care assistant and advance to a respiratory therapist through our tuition advancement program.

Careers in Care Management
Our care management team includes RN case managers, inpatient clinical social workers, and our central resource department (discharge assistants and referral coordinators). Together, they support patients, families, and care teams through the challenges that often accompany illness—such as hospital-to-home transitions, care planning, understanding future health needs, and connecting with community resources.
They provide psychosocial support, guide families and caregivers, offer education, and coordinate referrals to ensure patients have the services and support they need at every stage of care.

Careers in Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine
Our psychiatry and behavioral medicine team provides both group and individualized treatment in outpatient and inpatient settings. They support patients facing a wide range of mental health conditions, including depression, addiction, bipolar disorder, and other behavioral and psychiatric concerns.
Career opportunities span many levels of training and experience—from psychiatric technicians and administrative support roles to social workers and licensed therapists. Our team also includes licensed clinical social workers, licensed professional counselors, nurse practitioners, psychologists, and psychiatrists.
