RoVa Labs at Carilion Clinic
The City of Roanoke and Carilion Clinic have approved a Memorandum of Understanding to establish RoVa Labs at Carilion Clinic, a biotechnology incubator located at 1030 South Jefferson Street in the heart of the Roanoke Innovation Corridor. The incubator is part of a broader regional strategy to position Roanoke as a hub for biotechnology, life sciences, healthcare innovation, and research commercialization.
RoVa Labs will support research spinoffs, startups, and existing life sciences companies by providing shared wet-lab space, specialized equipment, prototyping and medical device support, commercialization resources, mentorship, office and team space, and operational support. The facility will initially use just over half of the 40,000-square-foot building, with Carilion Clinic Innovation among the first tenants.
The effort brings together Carilion Clinic, the City of Roanoke, the Roanoke Blacksburg Innovation Alliance, Virginia Western Community College, and Virginia Tech to strengthen connections among healthcare, higher education, industry, and economic development. Funded in part by a $15.7 million state award and local matching support, RoVa Labs is designed to help startups move discoveries from the lab to the marketplace, retain talent and intellectual property in Virginia, attract outside investment, and build the region’s biotech workforce. The incubator is expected to create 250 jobs within five years.
