Carilion Hospitals Earn High Grades for Patient Safety

The Leapfrog Group, an independent national nonprofit watchdog focused on patient safety, announced today that Carilion Franklin Memorial Hospital and Carilion New River Valley Medical Center have once again earned an “A”.

Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital, the system’s flagship hospital and region’s leading academic medical center, has earned a “B” Hospital Safety Grade. Roanoke Memorial is the region’s only level 1 trauma center and the largest referral hospital. As such, its teams treat the sickest of the sick—those in need of more acute care due to their conditions or the complexity of their cases.

Leapfrog assigns an “A,” “B,” “C,” “D” or “F” grade to general hospitals across the country based on over 30 performance measures reflecting errors, accidents, injuries and infections, and the systems hospitals have in place to prevent them.

Achieving these top Hospital Safety Grades is a significant accomplishment that represents an immense commitment and dedication to giving patients access to safe, quality care.

“Quality and safe patient care are the beacons that guide everything we do,” said Steve Arner, president and chief executive officer at Carilion. “These Hospital Safety Grades are the result of collaboration at the highest level among teams across our organization and a laser focus on giving our patients the best possible outcomes.”

The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade is peer-reviewed, fully transparent and free to the public. Grades are updated twice annually, in the fall and spring. It is one of many ratings Carilion pays attention to in our quest for exceptional quality and patient safety.
