Gun violence takes an emotional toll on parents and children.

Carilion Clinic recently brought a panel of local experts together to answer questions about community safety and the ways acts of brutality can affect our mental health.

The panel included:

  • Ashley Carle, a Roanoke-based school counselor
  • Joe Cobb, a member of Roanoke City Council and the city's Gun Violence Prevention Commission
  • Deneen Evans, a counselor in private practice and faculty member at East Tennessee State University
  • Katherine Liebesny, M.D., specialist with Carilion Children's department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry
  • Stacey Sheppard, housing and human services director for Roanoke's Total Action for Progress and retired law enforcement officer
  • Paula Wolfteich, Ph.D., director of Carilion Clinic's Center for Grief and Healing
