Introducing Carilion Mental Health: Removing Stigma, Simplifying Access to Care

Article by News Team on April 3, 2023
Mental healthcare is as necessary as physical healthcare. Carilion Clinic is taking steps to remove the stigma around it and make outpatient mental healthcare more accessible.

One in four American adults lives with mental illness, but stigma and access to care make it challenging to seek treatment.

To address those challenges, Carilion is relocating our expanded Roanoke-area outpatient mental health services in to a custom facility at Tanglewood.

Tanglewood is on the bus line, making it convenient for people without vehicles, and close to the highway for those who come from neighboring states for care.

Noting the shortage of mental health professionals across the nation, Robert L. Trestman, PhD, MD, chair of Carilion Mental Health, said that the larger, more accessible site will enable Carilion to expand its mental health services.

“We can help to make it better and we can help to empower each and every one of the people in our community to lead a full life,” he said.

The location will host an onsite lab and offer care to both adults and children.

The department's new name, Carilion Mental Health, also reflects the expanded outpatient services the department offers. These include:

The relocation will not affect inpatient and outpatient services in the New River Valley, and outpatient services will remain at Roanoke's south Jefferson Street location.

Addiction services will remain at its current locations close to the Emergency Department (ED). Carilion's successful ED Bridge to Treatment program recently won a $1.9 million grant to expand to healthcare organizations throughout Virginia.

Carilion Mental Health is expected to open at Tanglewood in October.
