About

Program Overview

Carilion Clinic is a not-for-profit health care organization based in Roanoke, Va. Through our comprehensive network of hospitals, primary and specialty physician practices and other complementary services, we work together to provide quality care close to home for nearly 1 million Virginians.

Virginia Tech Carilion Partnership

The Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine (VTCSOM) formed out of an innovative public-private partnership with Virginia Tech. Together, we are working to transform health care by educating the physician leaders of tomorrow. VTCSOM uses a patient-centered curriculum designed to develop physicians who can take research from the lab to the patient’s bedside. Students learn, train and work side by side with Carilion’s highly experienced medical staff.

Mission, Goals and Strengths

Our mission is to provide high-quality surgical care to the communities we serve, respond to unmet health care and social needs for our patients, train the next generation of physicians and the future leaders of surgery and medicine, and create the new knowledge that underlies the biology of surgical disease that will shape future practice.

Message from Leadership

Welcome to the Department of Surgery at Carilion Clinic. We take pride in our pursuit and application of innovations in clinical care, education and research, which enables us to deliver unique, compassionate care for our patients and their families that is recognized throughout the region and nationwide. We have been able to attract nationally recognized surgeons and leaders in their fields who provide exceptional clinical care.

The Department’s over 90 full-time faculty members participate in clinical activities, teaching and research at Carilion and through our partnership with Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine and the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute at VTC.

We provide exceptional training for our students, residents and fellows. Our focus is to build a culture for learning and education across all areas, providing all learners with experience in advanced and groundbreaking surgical techniques. Moving forward, we will continue to provide coordinated multidisciplinary care and support Carilion's mission of improving the health of the communities we serve.

"Providing comprehensive surgical care using minimally invasive approaches (laparoscopic, endoscopic, robotic) whenever possible. "
