Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery

Our team performs cosmetic and reconstructive procedures for all ages, including pediatric surgery through our Cleft and Craniofacial Center.

About

Program Overview

Established in 2012, the region’s largest plastic surgery group, all of whom are certified through the American Board of Plastic Surgery, serves both adult and pediatric patients. The team, including a fellowship-trained hand surgeon and pediatric plastic surgeon, specializes in breast reconstructive surgery, head and neck microsurgical reconstruction, cleft lip and palate surgery, and complex hand and upper extremity reconstruction.

Virginia Tech Carilion Partnership

The Fralin Biomedical Research Institute at VTC and the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine (VTCSOM) provide the residency program with outstanding opportunities to progress in cutting-edge research and educational activities. The integrated plastic surgery residency program, established in 2015, accepts two residents annually into a six-year program. Residents will acquire thorough basic science and clinical knowledge through a comprehensive curriculum that encourages research, scholarship and inquiry. The program will provide the resident with clinical rotations designed to cover the full scope of plastic surgery. Our residents will be aware of the moral and ethical obligations to their patients, colleagues and the larger society we all serve. The goal of the residency program is to produce plastic surgeons competent to practice independently as experts in the field, whether in private practice or academics.

Mission, Goals and Strengths

Our mission is to use the safest approaches to achieve the best possible surgical outcomes. The Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery will be a pioneer of surgical excellence through the dedicated integration of biomedical research, surgical precision and restoration.

Education

Overview

We are an ACGME-accredited integrated program located in Roanoke, Va. that focuses training on the three institutional pillars: patient care, education and research. Our program is affiliated with the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine, an allopathic medical school that accepted its inaugural class in 2010. Additionally, the program is located adjacent to the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute at VTC, with new state-of-the-art facilities and core faculty.
