Type 1.5 Diabetes: The “In-Between” Type You May Not Have Heard Of
Yep, it exists—and it’s often misdiagnosed.
Emily S. Doherty M.D.Chief, Medical Genetics & Dysmorphology"Our goal is to help those with a genetic disorder live as normal a life as possible."

Many childhood disorders have an inherited or genetic cause. We can help families understand all aspects of such disorders.

Services are available for persons 18 years and over who have, or are at risk of having, a genetic disorder. This includes continuing care for those diagnosed with a genetic condition in childhood, genetic testing and counseling for adult-onset diseases, and family history of a genetic condition.

Genetic testing of children for adult-onset conditions is typically not medically necessary. We can provide medically accurate information about the genetics of these diseases. Our office does not routinely perform genetic testing for healthy children with a family history of adult-onset disease.

When a referral to the genetics clinic is made, a three-generation family history, including both sides of the family, is the cornerstone of a genetic evaluation. This helps provide answers to the referring physician’s questions and may reveal other genetic issues within the family tree.

Most health insurance plans cover outpatient genetics consultations with referral order and prior authorization (if needed). For purposes of care coordination, we routinely request a referral from your/your child’s primary care provider.

Women who are pregnant or wish to become pregnant are typically scheduled with the genetic counseling team with Maternal-Fetal Medicine. Adult patients with cancer are typically scheduled with the genetic counseling team with Cancer Genetics.
