John Jane Jr., MDSenior Vice President and Chair, Neurosurgery"I believe that we should honor the trust that patients put in us by providing the highest quality of care."

Carilion Neurosurgeons are experienced in performing carotid endarterectomy, a surgical procedure to remove plaque or fatty deposits from the carotid arteries, which are the major blood vessels in the neck supplying blood to the brain. The procedure is used to prevent stroke in individuals with significant narrowing (stenosis) of the carotid arteries due to atherosclerosis.

This minimally invasive surgical tool removes hematomas with low tissue disruption, protecting parts of your brain that control speech, memory and vision. The neurosurgeon is able to navigate between the natural folds in the brain and map the exact location of the tumor or blood clot using imaging. Then, through an opening no larger than a dime, the neurosurgeon can remove the clot or tumor from the deepest recesses of the brain without cutting or damaging anything else in its path.

A cerebral aneurysm is a bulging, weakened area in the wall of an artery in the brain. Clipping involves the placement of a metal clip around the neck of a cerebral aneurysm to prevent it from rupturing. With expertise in treating critical conditions like aneurysms, teams at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital recently received the high Performing Award for Stroke by U.S. News & World Report.

A surgeon inserts a very thin metal wire that forms a coil inside a brain aneurysm to block blood flow. A brain aneurysm is a bulging, weakened area in the wall of an artery in the brain. This results in an abnormal widening or ballooning. Because the artery wall has a weakened spot, the aneurysm is at risk for bursting if blood flow isn’t blocked. Aneurysm can be treated by coiling or clipping it closed.

AVM surgery involves the removal or disconnection of abnormal, tangled blood vessels (arteriovenous malformations) in the brain. AVMs disrupt the normal blood flow and can lead to neurological symptoms or, in some cases, hemorrhage. Surgery is considered for AVMs that pose a significant risk of bleeding.

This procedure uses “clot-busting” medicine to dissolve a clot in a blood vessel in the brain or elsewhere in the body.
