Radiology Research
Radiology researchers at Carilion Clinic are dedicated to the support of sponsored clinical trials to improve care to our patients, in addition to leading studies at the forefront of functional and anatomic imaging technology.

Molecular Imaging
The department of Molecular Imaging at Carilion not only provides comprehensive diagnostic services but also advancing research. The research is largely centered on theranostics, the discipline of developing diagnostic imaging radiopharmaceuticals and therapeutics for the identification and treatment of cancer. Other areas of development using imaging include assisting with minimally invasive brain surgery, dementia and movement disorders and prediction of stroke outcome.
The STARBURST clinical trial will test an investigational imaging agent to determine if it can be utilized in cancers that express a specific protein (CAIX), enabling identification of potential tumors.

Neurointerventional Research
The Neurointerventional Radiology team specializes in brain, neck and spine procedures, treating life-threatening conditions of the central nervous system through endovascular approaches. They are leaders in neurointerventional research through national and international collaborations.
PE-TRACT is a clinical trial comparing two standard treatment options for pulmonary embolism, blood thinner medicine and catheter-directed therapy.
Captiva is a StrokeNet clinical trial funded by the NIH to compare three different pharmaceutical therapies for stroke.
