Biography

Dr. Learman was born in Fredericksburg, Virginia, but grew up in southern California. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in psychobiology from UCLA, and both a medical degree and a PhD in social psychology from Harvard University, before completing a residency in OBGYN at UCLA. During his 14 years at UC San Francisco, he directed the OBGYN residency program, conducted research to support clinical decision making, and was promoted to professor. He moved to Roanoke in 2019 to be dean of the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine after 11 years of additional experience as a department chair and associate dean. After practicing the full scope of OBGYN for 25 years, Dr. Learman now focuses on ambulatory care and clinical education.
