Biography

Dr. Jennifer Bath is from Wantage, NJ, and she received her bachelor's degree from Bloomsburg University in Pennsylvania. Her nursing experience includes long-term care, skilled nursing, geriatric psychiatry, emergency room, forensics, human resources, and trauma. She moved to Roanoke in 2003 to practice as a forensic nurse examiner and emergency nurse at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital. She also volunteered as an EMT and medic for Roanoke Emergency Medical Services for several years. She attended Jefferson College of Health Sciences (JCHS) for her master's degree in Nursing Education. She was adjunct faculty at JCHS for three years, teaching junior and senior nursing students a course on forensic nursing.

Dr. Bath has been the Clinical Nurse Specialist for Trauma Services since 2013. In this role, she oversees trauma patients' care from door to discharge by providing patients and families education specific to their injuries, promoting evidence-based care, educating nursing staff, and leading research and quality projects to improve patient outcomes. As a traumatic brain injury (TBI) survivor, Dr. Bath is passionate about providing in-depth education and focused exams to patients with TBI in the inpatient setting. She gets consults to see mild-moderate TBI patients in the hospital to perform baseline scoring and a physical assessment, provide education on symptom management and local resources, and make recommendations for follow-up care. This passion has led to a collaboration with Dr. Weppner to ensure that patients in the acute care setting receive the best care possible. Dr. Bath's Doctoral work included several hundred hours of clinical time spent with Dr. Weppner in the acute care, inpatient rehab, and Brain Injury Center settings.

She is dedicated to educating patients, families, nurses, residents, and physicians about TBI and the resources available to patients. She was awarded the Teaching Excellence Academy for Collaborative Healthcare aware for Scholarship of Teaching and Learning in 2020 for her dedication to teaching and research.

At the local level, Dr. Bath is a board member of the Partnership for Community Wellness (formerly Prevention Council of Roanoke). At the state level, she is the President-Elect of the Virginia Association of Clinical Nurse Specialists and an active member of several workgroups for the Virginia Nurses Association. At the national level, Dr. Bath is on the editorial board for the Journal of Trauma Nursing. She is known regionally as a speaker on trauma topics such as TBI, spinal cord, and geriatric trauma.

Her clinical interests include caring for patients with traumatic brain injuries, concussions, spinal cord injuries, geriatric trauma, and multiple rib fractures. She is also interested in researching TBI-related issues, outcomes in rib fracture patients, and geriatric trauma care.
