Biography
Dr. Kuehl joined the faculty of Carilion Clinic in 2007. He moved here from Portland, OR with his wife, Karen (also an EM faculty member), to build an EM residency program and is the program director of the VTC Emergency Medicine Residency Program. He has also previously worked in EM in Jackson Hole, Wyoming and San Francisco. He is a researcher with broad interests in practice variation and how physicians make decisions, health care costs, and traumatic brain injury. He mentors students and residents in research and enjoys making it a whole lot easier. Dr. Kuehl is passionate about teaching with interests in novel ways of teaching and assessment, research methodology, and professional development. He particularly enjoys bedside teaching of complicated procedures, especially orthopedics and urology. He is an equipment junkie and believes residents need the latest and greatest. He collects airway toys like some collect baseball cards. In his free time, he is likely found coaching his two sons in lacrosse or hockey. Any leftover time is spent downhill skiing and snowboarding, surfing, and fly fishing, especially on the New River and the James River for really big fish.
