Green Tea and Mint Cooler

By Recipe Team on August 2, 2022
Give your sweet tea a healthy makeover.

The classic Southern summer drink gets a low-carb update in this recipe from the American Institute for Cancer Research.

Green tea is rich in phytochemicals, like EGCG, that have been shown to protect DNA from damage and hinder cancer cell growth. And apple cider adds natural sweetness, so you can sip this sweet tea knowing you're doing something that's good for your health!

Ingredients:
8 six-inch mint sprigs
4 green tea bags
4 cups water
1-1/3 cups apple cider, refrigerated
4 tablespoons fresh lime juice
4 mint sprigs, for garnish
4 lime wedges, for garnish
Preparation:
  1. Combine mint and tea bags in a heatproof pitcher or container.
  2. In a medium saucepan, heat the water until bubbles start to form around the edge of the pot. If possible, use an instant-read thermometer to tell when the water is 180 degrees Fahrenheit.
  3. Pour hot water over the mint and tea in the pitcher. Steep for six minutes.
  4. Discard tea bags, leaving the mint in pitcher, and cool the tea to room temperature.
  5. Cover and refrigerate the tea with mint for 4 to 24 hours.
  6. Just before serving, add cider and lime juice to the chilled tea.
  7. Pour tea into 4 tall, narrow glasses. Garnish each glass with a fresh mint spring and lime wedge.
