When winter rolls around, many of us pack away our sunscreen. But sunscreen is just as important in the colder months.
Why Sunscreen Matters Year-Round
- UV Rays Are Always Around: Ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun are present all year, even on cloudy or overcast days. While UVB rays (the ones that cause sunburn) aren’t as strong in winter, UVA rays stay consistent year-round.
- Snow Reflects Sunlight: If there’s snow on the ground, there’s even more risk. Snow reflects up to 80% of UV rays, increasing your exposure.
- High Altitudes Increase Risk: Love skiing or snowboarding? The higher the altitude, the thinner the atmosphere. This means less UV rays are blocked, and your risk of sunburn and skin damage increases.
- Damage Adds Up: Even small doses of UV rays add up over time. Protecting your skin now helps prevent wrinkles, sunspots and bigger problems like skin cancer in the future.
- Winter Is Tough on Skin: Conditions like rosacea, psoriasis and eczema often flare up in cold, dry weather. Sunscreen adds an extra layer of protection against the elements.
Choosing the Right Sunscreen for Winter
- Go for Broad-Spectrum: Look for sunscreen that protects against both UVA and UVB rays.
- SPF Matters: Aim for SPF 30 or higher, even in winter. If you spend a lot of time outdoors, go for higher. (Tip: look for water-resistant options that won’t sweat off as easily!)
- Moisturizing is Key: Winter air is dry, so pick a sunscreen that also hydrates your skin. Megan Rorrer, master esthetician with the Carilion Clinic Cosmetic Center, recommends looking for ingredients like hyaluronic acid or ceramides.
Tips for Applying Sunscreen
- Never Skip It: UV rays can penetrate through cloudy skies and windows. Make sunscreen a daily habit, regardless of the weather or your plans for the day.
- Apply Generously: “Use about a teaspoon of sunscreen, or 2 finger lengths, for your face and more for exposed areas like your neck, ears and hands,” Megan advises.
- Reapply as Needed: If you’re outdoors for extended periods, reapply sunscreen every 2 hours, especially after sweating or wiping your face.
- Layer with Other Products: Megan suggests applying sunscreen as the final step in your skincare routine and before makeup if you wear it. “If you’re using foundation or tinted moisturizers with SPF, think of them as a supplement, not a replacement,” she says.
