Kids often need current physicals and medical records for school enrollment, sports tryouts and after-school programs. But back-to-school season is one of the busiest times for pediatricians, and you might be surprised at how quickly appointments fill up. Schedule now to beat the rush!
Why yearly checkups matter
In addition to staying up-to-date on vaccines, annual well-child visits are a key part of your child’s long-term health. These checkups allow your pediatrician to:
- Track growth and development
- Catch potential issues early
- Offer guidance on nutrition, sleep and more
- Address any concerns
Regular visits also help your child build trust with their doctor and get comfortable talking about their health—skills they’ll carry into adulthood.
What vaccines are required?
The Virginia Department of Health has a full list of immunizations required for school or daycare enrollment. “Most children who receive regular checkups are already on track,” notes Ryan Fulton, DO, section chief at Carilion Children’s Outpatient Pediatric Medicine.
But don’t worry if you’re behind. Whether your child just needs a booster or has missed several shots, now is the perfect time to get caught up! Your doctor can help create a catch-up schedule. “If you have any questions or concerns about vaccines, don’t hesitate to reach out to your trusted pediatrician,” says Dr. Fulton.
What about the flu shot?
The flu vaccine is recommended every year for both kids and adults. “Flu season starts September 1, and the vaccine is updated each year to match the most common flu strains,” explains Dr. Fulton. “That means last year’s shot won’t protect against this year’s flu.”
Flu shots are available at your pediatrician’s office, local pharmacy or community vaccine clinics. And don’t forget about COVID-19 and RSV! Talk to your doctor about the latest booster recommendations.
Make sure your child is protected, healthy and ready for a great school year—schedule their annual checkup today.
