Dealing with acne scars can be frustrating. With the right approach, you can get rid of even the most stubborn scars and achieve a clearer complexion.
What are acne scars?
Acne scars form when breakouts go deep into the skin and damage the underlying tissue. Picking at breakouts and “popping” pimples can also lead to scarring—and cause your acne to spread!
There are two main types of acne scars:
- Atrophic scars: These scars are most often seen on the face. They occur when there isn’t enough collagen produced during healing. These scars look sunken, sitting below the surrounding skin. Other names you may have heard for atrophic scars are boxcar, ice pick and rolling. These terms describe the different shapes of the depressions left by the scars.
- Hypertrophic scars: These scars are more often on the chest and back. Unlike atrophic scars, these occur when there’s too much collagen produced during the healing process. This results in raised areas above the level of the surrounding skin.
How to combat acne scars
- Clear active breakouts: Before addressing scars, it's crucial to get rid of active acne. Some acne treatments may cause initial inflammation, which can make scar treatments less effective. Severe, persistent acne may need prescription treatments from a dermatologist.
- Consult a specialist: Seek guidance from a skincare specialist or dermatologist to create a treatment plan for your needs. It will be important to know what type of scars you have, as this will help determine which treatment options are best.
- Use recommended products: Megan Rorrer, master esthetician with the Carilion Clinic Cosmetic Center, suggests looking for skincare products containing ingredients like alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs), lactic acid, retinoids, salicylic acid and sunscreen. These can help improve skin texture and reduce scars.
- Consider professional treatments: Our Cosmetic Center offers professional treatments like microdermabrasion, chemical peels, laser resurfacing, microneedling and Hydrafacials. These treatments can effectively target acne scars. Sometimes a combination of things may be necessary to achieve optimal results.
