What Is Microneedling?
Think of microneedling as a way to rejuvenate your skin. During a microneedling treatment, a handheld device is used to make tiny pricks in the top layer of the skin. These micro-injuries stimulate your body’s own collagen production, a key component in your skin’s elasticity and overall appearance.
Treatments can help with many different skin concerns, like:
- Fine lines
- Crow’s feet
- Deep wrinkles
- Pore size
- Acne scars
“After the age of 25, we lose 1% of our collagen each year,” explains Megan Rorrer, master esthetician with the Carilion Clinic Cosmetic Center. ”Every microneedling treatment gives you 1% back, making your skin appear healthier and more youthful.”
What Should You Expect?
The microneedling procedure is pretty simple and usually lasts 30 minutes to an hour, depending on the area being treated. A topical numbing cream will be applied to the area before treatment, so you should experience little to no pain.
Downtime after treatment is minimal—you can get back to your daily activities right away. Some patients report a slight burning sensation and redness, like a sunburn, for 1 – 2 days after treatment. Be sure to follow pre- and post-treatment instructions (like avoiding retinoids) to lessen discomfort.
Is it Safe?
Microneedling done by a trained professional is generally safe for almost anyone, year-round.
But don’t be tempted by at-home DIY microneedling treatments. “These can actually make your skin worse because they come with a risk of infection and scarring,” says Megan.
How Many Treatments Do You Need?
You can expect to see some improvement in your skin within a few weeks after just 1 treatment. A series of 3 treatments spaced out every 4 – 6 weeks is recommended for best results. After that, just 1 treatment per year can help maintain your youthful, healthy glow.
